The Castair DC3 is the dual control valve for the C3 pump — Castair's largest single-unit cast iron pump, rated for 15 HP, weighing 485 pounds, and configured with a three-cylinder W-arrangement (W3). If your shop runs one of the biggest single-stage Castair compressors in that class, the DC3 is the pilot valve/unloader assembly that enables both start/stop and continuous unloaded operation on that specific pump platform.

Why the C3 Pump Needs Dual Control More Than Most

At 15 HP, the C3-based compressor is built for shops with serious sustained air demand — industrial spray finishing, heavy collision repair with continuous air tool use, commercial tire operations with multiple simultaneous lifts, or sandblasting. These are exactly the applications where start/stop cycling causes the most damage.

A 15 HP motor pulls dramatically more inrush current at startup than a smaller unit. Startup amp draw across the motor windings at that power level falls in the same 4–5x running amperage range as any other motor, which on a 15 HP unit means substantial electrical stress at every restart. At high duty cycles — when the compressor would otherwise cycle 15 or more times per hour — that electrical and thermal stress accumulates fast.

The DC3 eliminates excessive restarts by enabling continuous unloaded operation: when the system reaches cutout pressure, the DC3 opens the unloader valve and the C3 pump runs free (no compression work, roughly half the amp draw) until pressure drops back to cut-in, when it resumes pumping automatically. If no air is demanded for approximately 2 minutes (adjustable), the unit shuts down and waits for the next demand cycle.

Temperature and Electrical Impact

  • Pumping mode: Pump runs at operating temperature, motor at normal working temp, full amp draw
  • Unloading: Pump temp drops significantly, motor temp drops, amp draw falls to approximately half of pumping load
  • Cold restart: Pump temperatures spike well above steady-state, motor sees 4–5x running amps at startup — this is the event that damages windings and pump valves over time

Castair's own data shows that at 50% duty cycle, a compressor cycles 18 times per hour in start/stop mode — nearly twice the recommended maximum of 10 starts per hour. At 15 HP, that's a serious problem. The DC3 keeps starts under control regardless of demand level.

Operating Modes

Start/Stop Mode

  • Setting: Turn control knob all the way to the right (in)
  • Operation: Compressor starts and stops based on pressure switch cutout/cut-in settings
  • Best for: Light to moderate demand, under 50% duty cycle
  • Limit: Maximum 10 starts per hour to protect motor windings

Continuous Run (Unloaded) Mode

  • Setting: Turn control knob all the way to the left (out)
  • Operation: At cutout pressure, unloader opens and pump runs free; motor continues at reduced amp draw
  • Auto-resume: Pump returns to full compression when pressure drops to cut-in setting
  • Auto-shutoff: Motor shuts off after approximately 2 minutes of zero air demand (timer is adjustable)

Compatibility — C3 Pump Only

The DC3 is built for the Castair C3 cast iron pump — the 15 HP, 485-pound, W3 (three-cylinder) pump with a 20.7" three-groove flywheel and 1-gallon oil capacity. The unloader port geometry and pilot valve sizing are specific to the C3. Using any other dual control on a C3 will not seat or seal correctly.

  • C1 pump (4–7.5 HP, 225 lbs, inline 2-cylinder): Use DC1
  • C2 pump (7.5–10 HP, 320 lbs, V4-cylinder): Use DC2
  • C3 pump (15 HP, 485 lbs, W3-cylinder, 20.7" flywheel): Use DC3 (this unit)

When Does a Shop Need the DC3 vs. Other Options?

Use the DC3 when: You're running a Castair C3-based compressor in a heavy-demand environment. Any application where the compressor runs at or above 50% capacity for extended periods — production painting, industrial sandblasting, multi-bay high-volume tire shops — should have dual control in continuous run mode to protect the motor and pump.

Don't use the DC3 if: Your compressor runs a C1 or C2 pump. The DC3 won't fit other pump platforms. Check your pump model before ordering.

If you're running two C3 pumps in a duplex: You'll need two DC3 valves (or ask us about a matched DC3 duplex pair). The DC3 controls one pump. For duplex coordination, both pumps need their own dual control.
