Compatibility and Fit

For B90, you may also see 5L920 as a fractional-equivalent cross-reference, though the classical B90 is the correct standard for industrial sheaves. If the old belt is gone, use the formula: Belt Length = 2C + 1.57(D + d) + (D - d)^2 / (4C), where C is center distance and D, d are sheave outside diameters. - Matched sets: On drives with two parallel belts, replace both belts simultaneously with matched belts from the same production lot. Running one new and one worn belt in a matched set is harder on the new belt than it would be running alone.
Installation Notes
- Do not pry the belt over the sheave: Move the motor to create slack before installing. The tension cord inside the belt cannot be seen, but forcing a belt over a sheave flange kinks or severs those cords. The belt will fail in days or weeks, not because it was defective but because it was damaged at installation.
- Tension by deflection measurement: For B-section belts, the standard target is 1/2 inch of deflection per foot of free span under approximately 5 lbs of applied force at mid-span. For a compressor drive with a 2-foot free span, 1 inch of deflection at 5 lbs is correct. Under-tensioning causes slip and heat; over-tensioning loads the shaft bearings of both the motor and pump and shortens their service life.
- Alignment check before tensioning: Place a straightedge across both sheave faces. Both faces should contact the straightedge without gap or rocking. Even slight sheave misalignment puts a lateral load on the belt that it is not designed for, and it will fail at the edges well before the rubber compound shows other wear.
- Sheave groove condition: Inspect the sheave grooves before installing any new belt. The groove walls should show uniform contact marks, not a polished band from belt slippage or a channel from belt bottoming. If the groove bottom is shinier than the walls, the belt has been riding on the bottom of the groove — it was either the wrong section or the sheave is worn. Fix the sheave before installing the new belt.
- Break-in re-tension: New belts stretch and seat during the first hours of operation. Check and re-tension after the first 1-2 hours of run time. This step is responsible for more premature "new belt" failures than almost any other installation mistake.
- Belt dressing products: Skip them entirely. Any spray that stops a belt from squealing is treating a symptom while leaving the cause in place. The cause is almost always tension, alignment, or sheave wear — all of which will keep destroying belts regardless of what you spray on them.
When to Replace Your Compressor Drive Belt
- Cracking: Cross-grain cracks on the belt back or along the inner groove face are the clearest signal that the rubber has hardened and is ready to fail. At this point the belt is a liability. Replace it.
- Glazed inner surface: A shiny, hard inner face indicates sustained slippage. The belt has been overheating. The cause needs to be corrected along with the belt replacement, or the new belt will glaze in short order as well.
- Edge fraying: Loose fibers or raveling at the belt edges mean the outer fabric wrap is degrading. End of service life is near.
- Startup or load squealing: Intermittent squeal at startup that clears within a few seconds: likely low tension. Squeal under load that continues after tension is verified: likely glazed surfaces on belt or sheaves.
- Compressor not building pressure at expected rate: With no valve or piston issue present, check whether the pump is actually running at the correct speed. A slipping belt can reduce pump RPM enough to noticeably reduce output without making obvious noise.
- Scheduled PM: On a production shop compressor, annual belt replacement regardless of visible condition is a reasonable PM practice. The dollar cost of the belt is a small fraction of the cost of an unplanned compressor outage during peak use.
