Installation Notes
- Never pry the belt over the sheave: Loosen the motor base or tensioner until there is enough slack to seat the belt by hand. Forcing a belt over a sheave damages the tension cords internally — the belt may look fine but it will fail early.
- Set correct tension: For B-section belts on compressor drives, the standard deflection target is 1/2 inch per foot of free span under moderate thumb pressure (roughly 5 lbs). Check the drive's design specs if available — some heavy-duty compressor drives run tighter than standard.
- Alignment before tensioning: Lay a straightedge across both sheave faces. The belt should track straight without side loading. Misalignment of even 1-2 degrees causes rapid edge wear and vibration.
- Inspect sheave condition: Run your finger inside the sheave groove. If the groove is smooth and shiny, or if there is a groove worn into the bottom by the old belt, the sheave is worn. A new belt on a worn sheave will not last. Address the sheave first.
- Break-in check: After the first 1-2 hours of operation, shut down and re-check tension. Belts seat during break-in and typically drop in tension. A quick re-tension at this point significantly extends service life.
- No belt dressing: Belt dressing compounds are a band-aid for a slipping belt. They do not fix the underlying cause — tension, alignment, or sheave wear — and they attack the rubber compound over time. Do not use them.
When to Replace Your Compressor Drive Belt
- Cracking or checking: Transverse cracks on the belt back or cracks along the inner groove face mean the rubber has hardened past its useful life. A cracked belt is a belt that will fail — often at a bad time. Replace it at the first sign of cracking.
- Glazing: A hard, shiny inner surface is evidence of slippage. The belt has been overheating from friction. Replace the belt and find and correct the cause: low tension, worn sheaves, or misalignment.
- Fraying: Loose fibers or raveling on the belt edges or back mean the fabric wrap is breaking down. The belt is approaching end of life.
- Squealing: Startup squeal that clears quickly can mean low tension. Persistent squealing after tension is confirmed correct points to glazed belt or worn sheaves.
- Slippage under load: Motor running, pump not keeping up, no mechanical binding. Low tension or worn belt. Check tension first; if tension is correct and the problem continues, the belt or sheaves need attention.
- Scheduled replacement: For a shop compressor running daily, annual belt replacement at PM time is a sound practice. The downtime cost of a belt failure on a loaded shop day far exceeds the cost of a proactive replacement.
