The Castair DSGB02 is a 1-quart (2-pound) replacement charge of desiccant silica gel for Castair's desiccant tower dryer system. When the silica gel in your desiccant dryer is saturated and no longer removing moisture effectively, DSGB02 is the replacement media you need. This is a maintenance consumable — desiccant silica gel has a finite absorption capacity and needs to be replaced periodically to maintain dryer performance.

What Desiccant Dryers Do and Why the Media Wears Out

Desiccant (regenerative) dryers use silica gel or molecular sieve media to adsorb moisture from compressed air through a physical/chemical process — the moisture molecules bond to the surface of the desiccant granules. Unlike refrigerated dryers that drain condensed liquid, desiccant dryers adsorb moisture as vapor, which is why they can achieve much lower dew points — down to -40°F or lower — compared to the 37°F dew point of a refrigerated dryer.

The trade-off is that the desiccant media eventually becomes saturated. In a regenerative (twin-tower) system, one tower adsorbs while the other regenerates using a portion of the dried compressed air to purge the accumulated moisture. This extends media life significantly. In a single-pass desiccant system (no regeneration cycle), the media will saturate faster and require replacement when its capacity is exhausted.

Note: Castair specifies that desiccant filters require a pre-filter and coalescing filter upstream (must use prefilter and coalescing per their catalog). Installing a desiccant filter without adequate upstream oil removal will rapidly contaminate and permanently degrade the silica gel media.
