The Castair 10-215-3 is a 10 HP three-phase open drip proof motor rated for 208/230/460V service, built for industrial air compressor duty. This is the replacement motor for Castair industrial compressor systems operating on three-phase power — the most common configuration for shops with proper commercial electrical service. At $993.53, it is approximately $420 less than the equivalent single-phase model and draws significantly less current, making it the right choice for any shop that has three-phase power available.

Three-Phase Advantage for 10 HP Compressors
Three-phase power delivers consistent torque throughout each rotation of the motor shaft, which translates to smoother compressor operation, lower starting current, and longer motor life compared to single-phase equivalents. For a 10 HP compressor running heavy duty cycles in a production shop, this matters. The 10-215-3 draws only 14A at 460V — compared to 43-46A for the single-phase version at the same power output. That difference has a real impact on your electrical infrastructure costs and on wire sizing throughout the installation.
Dual Voltage Winding: 230V vs. 460V
- 460V operation (most common in industrial settings): Half the amperage of 230V, meaning smaller wire gauge, lighter contactors, and lower line losses over distance
- 208/230V operation: For facilities with lower-voltage three-phase service — motor is internally reconnectable, typically at the terminal board inside the conduit box
- Check your nameplate before ordering: The voltage you wire to changes the terminal connection configuration — confirm with your electrician if you are unsure which service voltage you have
Frame, Shaft, and Fitment Details
- 215T frame: Same NEMA frame as the single-phase 10-215-1 — if you are converting a single-phase installation to three-phase power, the motor base and mounting typically do not change
- 1-3/8 inch shaft: Matches Castair P2B-series pulleys for 10 HP compressor pump drives (P2B625-13/8, P2B675-13/8, P2B80-13/8, P2B875-13/8)
- 135 lbs: 30 lbs lighter than the single-phase equivalent, which slightly eases handling during installation and reduces motor base load
Open Drip Proof Enclosure
ODP motors ventilate internally, keeping the windings cool during continuous operation. They are rated for indoor, relatively clean and dry environments — standard shop compressor rooms. Not suitable for outdoor or washdown service. For particularly dusty or wet environments, totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) options are available — contact us for availability.
Single-Phase vs. Three-Phase: The Decision
- 10-215-3 (three-phase, $993.53): Lower cost, lower amperage, smoother operation, longer service life in continuous duty. Use this if you have three-phase power.
- 10-215-1 (single-phase, $1,416.80): Required only when three-phase power is unavailable. Higher cost, higher amperage, requires a heavier electrical service.
If you are installing a new compressor system and are on the fence about bringing in three-phase power, the savings on just the motor ($420) plus electrical infrastructure savings often justify the one-time cost of having your utility add three-phase service.
What's in the Box
- 1x Castair 10 HP open drip proof motor, 208/230/460V 3-phase, Frame 215T, 1725 RPM
- Standard motor leads and terminal connections
Note: Pulleys, belts, and motor base sold separately. For 7.5-10 HP installations, see Castair 213D/213DM or 215D/215DM adjustable belt tensioner bases, and P2B-series pulleys for 1-3/8 inch shafts. Magnetic motor starter is required for three-phase applications — see Castair magnetic starter options.
When Does a Shop Need This vs. Stepping Up or Down
This motor is the right size for Castair industrial compressors in the 7.5-10 HP three-phase range with 215T frames. The 7.5 HP three-phase version (7-213-3) uses a 213T frame and 1-3/8 inch shaft at 130 lbs. The 15 HP three-phase (15-254-3) steps up to a 254T frame and 255 lbs. Do not swap frames — the mounting bolt pattern changes between T-frame sizes and the motor will not bolt up to the existing base. If you are stepping up from 7.5 HP to 10 HP, you will likely need a new motor base, pulleys, and belt guard.
