What a Pressure Switch Does on an Air Compressor
The pressure switch monitors tank pressure through a 1/4" NPT port and controls the motor circuit. When tank pressure drops to the cut-in setpoint, the switch closes the circuit and the motor starts. When pressure reaches the cut-out setpoint, the switch opens the circuit and the motor stops. The differential between cut-in and cut-out is typically 30 PSI on Castair compressors — for example, 95 PSI cut-in / 125 PSI cut-out on low-range switches, or 145 PSI cut-in / 175 PSI cut-out on high-range switches.
Switches with unloader ports also control an unloader valve that vents the discharge line on shutdown, allowing the motor to restart against zero head pressure. Without an unloader, a single-phase motor has to restart against full tank pressure — which exceeds its starting torque on larger pumps and trips breakers or damages the motor capacitor.
