The Castair DC2x2 is a matched duplex pair of DC2 dual control valves — one for each pump in a duplex compressor system built around two C2 cast iron pumps (7.5–10 HP each). If you're running a duplex setup and both units share a common tank, you need both controls configured to work together in alternating or lead/lag operation. The DC2x2 gives you that out of the box as a coordinated pair rather than ordering two individual DC2 valves and trying to synchronize them yourself.

What a Duplex Compressor Needs From Dual Control

A duplex compressor runs two complete pump-and-motor assemblies, typically alternating so neither unit carries the full load continuously. In a high-demand shop — production body shop, multi-bay tire shop, industrial finishing line — a duplex configuration provides redundancy (if one unit fails, the other keeps air flowing) and doubles your CFM capacity for sustained heavy demand.

Standard start/stop operation on both units in a duplex still creates the same high-restart-count problem as a single unit: when demand stays at or above 50% of total capacity, the units cycle too frequently. Each restart on a 7.5–10 HP motor pulls 128–168 amps of inrush current. On two motors, that's up to 336 amps of startup draw cycling through your electrical panel multiple times an hour.

With the DC2x2, both units operate in coordinated continuous-run mode during peak demand. When pressure reaches cutout, both pumps unload simultaneously — or staggered, depending on your pressure switch configuration. Each pump runs at approximately half its loaded amp draw during the unloaded phase. Motors stay cooler, pump valves and rings last longer, and your panel sees steady load instead of repeated high-current spikes.

Operating Modes — Same as DC2, Applied to Both Units

  • Start/stop mode (both units): Knobs turned to the right (in) on both controls. Units alternate based on pressure switch sequencing. Suitable for demand below 50% of total system capacity.
  • Continuous run mode (both units): Knobs turned to the left (out). Both units unload at cutout, resume at cut-in. Either unit or both run depending on demand level.
  • Auto-shutoff: Each control shuts its unit off after approximately 2 minutes of no air demand (timer adjustable independently on each control).

  • Inrush elimination: At 128–168A per motor at startup, a duplex running 18 starts/hour per unit is hammering both sets of motor windings. Continuous run mode eliminates this.
  • Thermal management: Pump temps spike to 263°F at every cold restart vs. a steady 192°F during unloaded continuous operation. Cooler pumps mean longer valve and piston ring life.
  • Electrical demand charges: Many commercial utility rates include a demand charge based on peak amperage draw. Eliminating high-inrush restarts can reduce your demand charge on your electric bill.
  • Matched pair: The DC2x2 ensures both controls are identical and calibrated to the same specifications, which matters for consistent unloading behavior across both pumps.

The DC2x2 is designed for duplex compressor systems built on two Castair C2 pumps — the two-stage, V4 (four-cylinder) cast iron pumps rated for 7.5–10 HP. The C2 pump weighs 320 pounds, uses a 19.0" two-groove flywheel, and holds 2 quarts of oil.

  • For C1-based duplex (4–7.5 HP each): Use DC1x2 (pair of DC1 valves)
  • For C2-based duplex (7.5–10 HP each): Use DC2x2 (this unit)
  • For C3-based duplex (10–15 HP each): Use DC3x2 (pair of DC3 valves)
