Castair CAST-LUBE QT10W30 is a 1-quart, 10W-30 full-synthetic compressor oil for piston air compressors. This is the factory-recommended full-synthetic option for Castair piston compressors where longer drain intervals matter. At $25.41 per quart with an 800-hour or 8-month service rating, the full-synthetic costs more per quart than the semi-synthetic QT5W30 but covers double the service interval. For a shop compressor running 4-6 hours per shift, 800 hours works out to roughly a full year between oil changes on one fill. The math favors the full synthetic on high-use equipment.

Full Synthetic vs. Semi-Synthetic — The Real Difference

The Castair QT5W30 semi-synthetic is rated at 4 months or 400 hours ($11.55/qt). The QT10W30 full synthetic doubles that to 8 months or 800 hours ($25.41/qt). Both use the same -37°F pour point and multi-grade formulation, but the full-synthetic base oil resists thermal breakdown better at the sustained high temperatures a piston pump generates under continuous operation. On a compressor running all day, the full synthetic also reduces varnish buildup on cylinder walls, valve seats, and in the crankcase — which is why Castair sells Varnasolv rotary varnish cleaner for units being converted from semi-synthetic or conventional oil to full synthetic.

Key Specifications

  • Part Number: QT10W30
  • Size: 1 quart
  • Grade: 10W-30 multi-grade full synthetic
  • Pour point: -37°F
  • Service rating: 8 months or 800 hours
  • Application: Piston air compressors
  • Price: $25.41

Oil Properties

  • Full synthetic formulation: Superior thermal stability versus semi-synthetic at sustained operating temperatures
  • High temperature rated: Maintains viscosity under piston compressor operating conditions
  • Low carbon: Minimizes carbon deposit buildup on valve seats, piston crowns, and discharge passages
  • Non-foaming: Foam in compressor oil causes cavitation, inconsistent lubrication, and accelerated wear
  • All-season multi-grade: -37°F pour point ensures flow at cold shop temperatures without warming up the oil first
  • Factory approved: Specified by Castair for piston compressor use

Complete CAST-LUBE Product Lineup

  • QT5W30 — 1 qt, 5W-30 semi-synthetic, 400 hrs / 4 months ($11.55)
  • GA5W30 — 1 gal, 5W-30 semi-synthetic, 400 hrs / 4 months
  • QT10W30 — 1 qt, 10W-30 full synthetic, 800 hrs / 8 months ($25.41) — this unit
  • GA10W30 — 1 gal, 10W-30 full synthetic, 800 hrs / 8 months
  • GA4000 — 1 gal, full synthetic for rotary screw compressors, 4,000 hrs / 1 year
  • FG4000 — 5 gal, full synthetic for rotary screw compressors, 4,000 hrs / 1 year

Important: Piston Oil Is Not Rotary Screw Oil

The QT10W30 is for piston compressors only. Do not use piston oil in a rotary screw compressor. Rotary screw air ends require synthetic oil specifically formulated for the continuous shear environment of a screw air end — that is the GA4000 or FG4000. Using piston oil in a rotary screw will cause foaming, overheating, and premature air end failure. Conversely, the piston-grade oils are not over-engineered — they are correctly formulated for piston compression environments and provide the right viscosity and film strength for reciprocating pump lubrication.

When to Use QT10W30 vs. QT5W30

If your compressor runs more than 2-3 hours per day or you want to reduce oil change frequency, the QT10W30 pays for itself in extended service intervals. The QT5W30 at $11.55 needs changing every 4 months or 400 hours. At 800 hours, the QT10W30 at $25.41 comes out to similar cost per service interval — and you change it half as often. For compressors running in hot shop conditions or at high duty cycles, the full synthetic also handles thermal stress better and is less likely to break down between service intervals.
