The Dual Bolt Design
Castair's adjustable bases use a dual bolt pattern that locks the motor position after tensioning. The adjustment slot allows the motor to slide along its mounting axis to increase or decrease belt tension, then the two bolts lock it in place. This is a significant practical advantage over fixed-mount bases: belt tension drifts as new belts seat in and as belts age, and being able to re-tension without pulling the belt guard means the adjustment actually gets done during routine maintenance.
Why Proper Belt Tension Matters
- Too loose: Belt slips under load, especially at startup. Slipping generates heat that degrades the belt material. Motor draws excessive current trying to overcome slip. Output drops.
- Too tight: Excess radial load on motor bearings and pump input shaft bearing. Accelerates bearing wear on both the motor (shortening motor life) and the pump crankshaft (expensive repair).
- Correct tension: Belt deflects approximately 1/2" per foot of span under moderate finger pressure. Check this with each oil change.
