Castair 35HP Commercial Air Compressor — Vertical Tank with Mounted Starter (C3516V60-S)
The C3516V60-S is a 35HP, three-phase, two-stage cast iron air compressor on a 60-gallon vertical ASME tank, with the magnetic motor starter factory-mounted and pre-wired. Vertical tank orientation saves floor space — a 60-gallon vertical tank footprint is roughly half the floor area of an equivalent horizontal tank. At 35HP with a factory starter, you're getting a complete, ready-to-wire unit for high-production commercial and industrial environments.
Spec note: Castair does not publish complete spec sheets for the C3516V60-S in their public tables. Data below is derived from model naming conventions and comparable C-series units. Contact us for confirmed CFM, RPM, and dimensional specs before ordering.
Vertical Tank — Practical Advantages
The vertical tank on the C3516V60-S has a significantly smaller floor footprint than a horizontal 60-gallon tank. Typically a 60-gallon vertical tank runs 20-24 inches in diameter and 60-70 inches tall. In a busy shop where floor space competes with vehicle lifts, toolboxes, and work areas, this matters. The tradeoff is ceiling height — vertical tanks require adequate clearance above the unit for proper installation and service access to the pump.
Cast Iron Pump and Two-Stage Compression
Castair builds all of their C-series compressors around all-cast-iron pumps running at slow RPM. Two-stage compression means the air passes through two compression stages — a large-bore low-pressure cylinder handles the initial compression to intermediate pressure, then a smaller high-pressure cylinder brings it to final working pressure. The result is more thermally efficient compression at pressures above 125 PSI, which is why Castair's two-stage commercial units are factory set to 175 PSI shutoff versus 125 PSI for their single-stage units.
Pump Features
- All cast iron: Cylinders, heads, crankcase — no aluminum on the working components
- Two-stage compression: Efficient operation at 175 PSI working pressure
- Slow RPM: Lower heat, longer valve and bearing life, quieter operation
- Tapered roller bearings: Both ends of the crankshaft
- Precision steel connecting rods: Automotive-type rod bearings at crank, needle bearings at wrist pin
- Disc and spring valves: Serviceable, efficient, reliable under continuous operation
- 4-ring pistons: Better sealing efficiency, less oil in the air stream
- Centrifugal unloader: Load-less starts — motor reaches RPM before compression begins
60-Gallon Vertical ASME Tank
- Vertical orientation: Compact floor footprint compared to horizontal equivalent
- ASME-rated pressure vessel: Code-compliant for commercial/industrial use
- Powder coat exterior: Rust-resistant finish
- 4-leg base: Standard on Castair vertical tanks — stable, elevated for condensate access
- ASME safety valve: Factory-installed pressure relief
- Copper discharge and unloader tube: Durable and better heat dissipation than flex hose
- Totally enclosed metal belt guard: OSHA-compliant
Factory-Mounted Magnetic Motor Starter
The -S suffix means the magnetic motor starter is factory-mounted and wired on this unit. At 35HP on three-phase power, a magnetic starter is required — the motor's inrush current at startup requires overload protection beyond what a standard pressure switch handles. Factory installation saves time on-site; your electrician runs the incoming three-phase feed to the starter enclosure and you're done.
- Three-phase motor: More efficient than single-phase at this HP, lower operating current per leg
- Full 15% service factor: Industrial motor rated to handle sustained loads above nameplate HP
- Built-in overload protection: Part of the magnetic starter

When Does a Shop Need This vs. Stepping Up or Down?
Choose vertical over horizontal when floor space is the binding constraint and ceiling height is available. Both tank orientations use identical pump and motor components — the only practical difference is footprint versus height.
Step down to a 25HP industrial unit if your production demand is somewhat lower and reserve volume is important — Castair's I25324HC4-S puts 109 CFM at 0 PSI on a 240-gallon horizontal tank, giving you more buffer between cycles at lower HP cost.
Step up to a duplex (two pumps, two motors, one tank) if shop uptime and redundancy matter more than absolute output.
